How usage limits work

Each plan includes a number of tokens per month, shared by everyone in the organization. To stop one burst of activity from using up the whole month, the same allowance is also checked over a rolling 5-hour session window and a weekly window. A message goes through on the plan only when all three windows have room.

The three windows

WindowSizeWhen it resets
Current session25% of the monthly allowanceRolling: 5 hours after your oldest usage still inside the window
Weekly limits60% of the monthly allowanceOn the same day and hour every week. By default Tuesday 12:00 UTC; Settings → Usage shows your exact reset time
Monthly limitThe plan’s full monthly allowanceAt midnight UTC on the 1st of each month

The weekly window is not a rolling 7 days: it starts afresh at the same day and time every week.

All figures are tokens. Everything you send and receive counts: your messages, attached content Amara reads, and Amara’s replies.

What counts

  • Shared across the organization. Usage by every member, in web chat, the desktop app, Syntic Code and the API, counts toward the same windows.
  • Failed requests don’t count. A request that fails before Amara starts answering doesn’t use your allowance. A reply that was cut off part-way counts for what was delivered.
  • Free organizations of one person share. If you own more than one Free organization, they share a single Free allowance.

When a window is full

  1. If usage credits are on, the message is paid from your credit balance instead, within your credit spend limits. See Plan allowance vs usage credits.
  2. If usage credits are off, or can’t pay, you are paused until the window resets. Syntic tells you which limit you reached and when it reopens.

When more than one window is full, Syntic reports the one that reopens last, because that’s when the plan can pay again.

Some features have separate daily or monthly counts, such as web searches, file uploads and image credits. See Daily limits.
